Tanka - Prairie Dogs III

Dogs of the prairie

Owing allegiance to none

We are vagabonds

No homes but the dirt and sky

We own nothing but our hearts

Tanka - Prairie Dogs II

We do two-mutt strut

Across prairie dog prairie

Too lazy to hunt

We calculate losing odds

Chasing grasshoppers instead

Tanka

Heart beating War Drum

Like my ancestors before

Tonight I am Red

Called to the fields of Battle

I answer the call of Blood

Tanka - Prairie Dogs

The black dog and I

Wander across the prairie

We two are the same

Both of questionable blood

Finding fortune where we can

It’s funny, sometimes, where you find your muse.  While back on the reservation last summer, I made the acquaintance of a stray dog.  She was often my companion during the week, just looking for a friendly hand and perhaps a few scraps from the table.  I wish I could have taken her home, but I guess she already was.

Tanka

Drum beat heart

Stirring blood of Red

We make War

On past, present, future

Taking back our souls

Poem - Yellow Boy

Sing to me

Ancient songs

Your voice

The sound of drums

Of our ancestors

Of our past

A battle song

Lifts my heart

As I lift

Your lever

Chambering your spirit

And I

Tense my finger

Releasing your soul

We are brothers

In fire

Red warrior

And Yellow Boy

Tanka - dr(ink)

Sixty-Four Ounces

Old English to pacify

Restless savages

Drink ‘til amnesia takes hold

Trying to forget ourselves

Renegade Red Man

Reservation runaway

Still running today

Chased by the ghosts of my past

Can’t shake what I can’t let go

Red flower rises

Brings thorns to a field of white

We are still alive

Free Verse - By Reservation Only

He

Sat me down

And told me

All the things

He knew

To be true

Because,

He said

He knew

My “kind”

He said

That he knew

That I was

A liar

A thief

A hooligan

Of the most

Detestable sort

But,

He said

He understood

That it was

Just my genes

My nature

My inferior

Blood

He never

Offered a solution

Only the

Statements of fact

And all I did

Was listen

Because that

Is what

A boy does

When an adult

Tells him

All the things

He knows

To be

True
